To Tip, or Not to Tip
I'm sorry. I got caught up in another one of these arguments online with people who have no idea...
As most of us do, I felt compelled to vent.
You have no idea what these people do to give you the level of service they are able. They are your conduit so you don't have to do two or more hours of prep/sidework, deal with angry cooks, work in conditions that are often not safe, hot, and on their feet for up to (and often more) than ten hours a day. As quickly as they can, and with a smile. In extremely close quarters with a group of equally stressed and abused people. All while almost always working for an egomaniac or sadist who is robbing their pay and expecting them to break the rules of physics 9 or ten million times a shift. No job protections, no arbitration, nothing. All for a federally mandated minimum wage of $2.13. Some states and localities offer more. Many do not. ALWAYS below the "real" minimum.
Why do we do it? Some of us love the work, the adrenaline, the people, the education (you have no idea the world of knowledge you can gain), and, bottom line EVERYBODY NEEDS A JOB, but all of us hope for that one dream job where the boss is not too insane and the money's good enough to put up with it.
BTW, restaurant workers are among the highest percentage of working poor in any job description. Yep, some 2 million or more of us.
You're paying for a service. A commission on a sale. Tell any salesman that you like what he offers, but you're not going to pay his commission (car, real estate, clothes, business deals, whatever) and you will not get your product/service. You will be laughed out of the store, if not physically removed. Us? We don't have the luxury of getting our commission up front, nor guaranteed.
So, while you don't have any idea the effort put into delivering your product, you're robbing their work. You're stealing their sweat and effort when you refuse to pay their commission. Consider it a bargain.
Or eat fast food and cook at home. Restaurants are not for you. Unless you have no ethics, compassion, or humanity.
BTW, "takeout" is time consuming, a pain in the ass, disrupts our flow, and takes us away from our regular, tipping customers, where we make our money. Don't tip on carry out? Same deal as above. Just worse.
