Violence, Images, and Offense

Just got a private message. "I'm blocking you for posting violent images". I have no idea what she had a problem with, and I'm blocked, so no way to resolve the issue. Or even know. Michelle Davis. If anyone cares to ask.

  • Christopher Buxton Probably the photo of the guy getting his throat cut.
  • Jennifer Wheeler She probably did you a favor by leaving.
  • Alex McDowell Oh yeah. The throat cut thing. Sorry.
  • Alex McDowell Best if we live in a delusion that those things aren't as fucking gruesome as they are.

  • Alex McDowell What if I posted the video of Eric Garner dieing at the hands of the NYPD? Or flag draped caskets arriving at Dover? Or bodies strewn across the street from US bomb blasts in some Middle Eastern city? Or any of the photographic evidence from the Nuremburg trials? Or pretty much ANY violent human interaction or aftermath? Reality is not pretty.

  • Christopher Buxton People do not come to Facebook to see reality, Alex. They come to catch up with friends and argue politics. You have, of course, the right to post whatever you wish ... but you shouldn't be offended when someone chooses to be offended by what you post.
  • Bj Ferguson I think telling someone they have no right to be offended by other people taking offence is a little bit like telling one party involved in a duel that he has no right to bleed, should the bullets from the other person's gun happen to enter their body. All sorts of different people come to Facebook, for all sorts of different reasons...some come especially to see the reality that is purposely being avoided in the real world, by the propaganda machines and mutant media whores. I wonder that any of us can draw a breath, these days, that some delicate flower isn't half offended by the noise and assumption of such!
  • Alex McDowell Of course she has the right to not participate. It's just frustrating as hell to not be able to engage in the discussion.
