Texas Ups and Downs: Matt Dillahunty, TAE, and Wendy Davis

I did my time in Texas. Briefly, in the Dallas area, a long time ago. Texas has gotten a "bad rap", and I mostly think it should. From Rick Perry, "W", Louie "Gomer" Gohmert, and a cast of so many clowns and miscreants they keep voting into power, not to mention the religious base, and the whole "Texas is good for business because we screw the people and the planet", their reputation is not in error.
But now, there is a revival, so to speak, in parts of Texas (Ok, mostly just in Austin, and Houston) that seems to lean hard against that  reputation and should be supported.
Everyone's buzzing these past few days about the Wendy Davis filibuster. Rachel Maddow did a great piece about it.   (You have to find the June 26th installment). Catch it. It's a demonstration of the great dramas that American democracy can offer. Historic. Really. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/26315908/#52370415
I want to direct you to the best, most patient, and most rational people on the web doing a web TV show out of Austin. Matt Dillahunty and his crew in The Atheist Experience take live phone calls from flummoxed believers and walk them through the illogic of their myths. I don't catch them as often as I should. Matt was on the fast track to becoming a "dyed-in-the-wool" Charismatic Evangelical preacher. Then he read the Bible (rumored to be the best and fastest road to atheism. Really.) Then he read more broadly.  http://www.atheist-experience.com/people/matt_dillahunty/ Whatever your belief bent, you should catch the show. Matt is like a surgeon, deconstructing, piece by piece, with logic, and a great deal of patience (that sometimes gets forced out the window when things get REALLY interesting) the ridiculous and the stupid.
Texas may become the vanguard of our progressive future. Demographics, music, culture, and the inevitable push-back to idiocy, may create the beautiful irony of Texas being the state that brings us from our embarrassing 18th century sensibilities into the 21st century. Just maybe.
